Termites – Keep them away from your home – Inspections – Part 1

Termites will do whatever it takes to get into your home - Inspect regularlyI came across this photo the other day which is really fascinating, but highlights the importance of managing the drainage around your home but more importantly, inspecting regularly for termites around your home.

While you do need a professional timber pest inspector to inspect your property at least once per year (minimum requirement according to Australian Standards), you need keep checking on things yourself as well.

What’s in the picture?

The circled area is what we call in the industry a ‘termite lead’ – officially its called a ‘stalagmite‘ – because it was built from the ground up.

In this case the termites have sensed the moisture on the ground dripping from the air conditioner drain.  They started building their ‘mud tube’ from the ground up, until they reached their goal.  From this point they actually entered the house!

Termites can build these types of structures well over a meter in height! (I know – we have one in our offices here).

What does this mean for you and keeping termites out of your home?

  • You need to keep looking on a regular basis to make sure that nothing like this is happening.  I would recommend that you have a good look every 6-8 weeks.

Problems like this don’t happen overnight.

What if you discover termites at your home?

  • Don’t touch or disturb the termites in any way
  • Don’t spray them with anything
  • Don’t damage or remove their workings (including things like this mud tube)
  • Call in a professional pest controller who specialises in timber pest and termite treatments.
  • ALWAYS insist on getting a full timber pest inspection and report, as part of the process.
  • Consider the options that they put forward.  If they don’t give you options – find someone else.
  • Make your choice of termite control in an informed manner – consider the advantages and disadvantages of each option.

Why get serious about termites around your home?

There is no house insurance that will insure you against damage to your home or contents if termites are the cause.

A lot of people think they won’t be affected by these little munchers – but the fact is that 1 in 4 properties in Australia will be affected by the threat of termite invasion.
